PRESIDENTS'S MESSAGE

Miss Akosua Serwah, CEOAs the President/Chief Executive Officer of Democratic Youngsters Foundation, my aim is to take forward the board’s policy agenda set out in the strategic development plans to contribute to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). This Report looks back over the last year on progress made as set out in our 2007 Strategic Plan.

The world is witnessing a revolution in the approach to
Development. People, institutions and both governmental and
and non-governmental organisations including civil societies
have realised that respect for human rights and attention to
basic health especially for young people.

Sexual and reproductive health is important to us all at all stages of our lives. Yet too many people are denied their right to reproductive health information. The vast majority are women especially young women in developing countries and countries in transition.

Thousands of young Ghanaians especially young women lack access to sexual and reproductive health information and services they need to choose their family size and improve their own lives.

Many more young people especially young women in Ghana are living with HIV and Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) that could have been prevented. Each year, some 500,000 young women especially those who are out of school have unwanted or unintended pregnancies. For too many, their option is abortion in unsafe conditions. Young women need more choice and control over their sexual and reproductive lives.

Violence against women and girls is a problem of pandemic proportions. At least one out of every ten women in Ghana has been beaten, coerced into sex, or otherwise abused in her life time-with the abuser usually some one known to her. Perhaps the most pervasive human rights violation that we know today, it devastates lives, fractures communities and stalls development.

This report reviews our progress so far in implementing action to help address the above issues amongst young people and women in the Ga-East District of the Greater Accra Region of the republic of Ghana.

Sincerely,
Miss Akosua Serwah
Chief Executive Officer
