» Combating HIV/AIDS through awareness creation, workshops and seminars

[Target population: 1,000 sex workers, hairdressers and barbers, drivers, schools, religious centres]

Justification: The desire of DYF to join the Government and other agencies in containing the HIV/AIDS pandemic.

  • DYF’s stance as a not-for-profit NGO that partners with government and allied agencies, particularly the Ghana Aids Commission, to fight deadly diseases such as the HIV/AIDS.
  • The current prevalent rate of 1.9%, though appreciating, needs further lowering in boosting government’s desire for the total eradication and prevention of the spread of the disease.
  • Any investment made in sustaining the human resource in the country for its eventual utilization needs support.
  • It is imperative that its immediate environ benefit from such programmes
  • It enhances the image of the DYF and fulfils the Government’s desire for ensuring that HIV/AIDS have no place in Ghana.

Goal: The programme is aimed at helping to eradicate and prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS particularly among the youth within the Ga East and Adentan Assemblies. It is envisaged that the necessary awareness programmes put in place will go along way in helping to contain the pandemic.

Actions to effect project: Activities to achieve the anticipated results include:

  • Baseline needs assessment of the awareness campaign programme
  • Recruitment and selection of potential trainees
  • Organization of VCT training for 30  peer educators
  • Training materials development, production and testing
  • 3-day training of selected peer educators
  • Seminars, workshops for selected  professional groups
  • Monitoring, Supervision and Evaluation of programme success.

 
Project Outcomes: Anticipated results achieved after the implementation of the training programme include:

  • 1,000 members of professional and identifiable groups sensitized on HIV/AIDS through workshops and seminars
  • 30 peer educators trained and equipped in VCT techniques
  • A 5-member HIV Steering Committee formed and operational
  • 50 cartons of assorted condoms supplied
  • Evaluation and reporting systems developed and put in place to enhance follow-up training programmes (i.e. refresher courses)
